NLI Leadership Training Program
NLI LEADERSHIP TRAINING PROGRAM
Are you interested in running for office?
We need more Native people in positions of political power. Indigenous peoples represent more than 3% of the U.S. population, and yet we hold just 0.03% of elected offices. No one knows our communities better than us. Our communities need you!
The Native Land Institute in collaboration with Advance Native Political Leadership is seeking New Mexico Native leaders who are interested in running for office in the next 1 to 3 years to join our leadership training. Sign up to take the next step toward running for office.
Our 2023 New Mexico Training Session:
Wednesday, September 13, 2023 – Sunday, September 17, 2023
9:00 AM-5:00 PM (MST)
The training is a joint program of Native Land Institute and Advance Native Political Leadership, through the Native Leadership Institute.
Native Leadership Institute
The Native Leadership Institute (NLI) is the only national Native leadership training, research, and data institute created by and for Indigenous peoples focused on power building and Native voter research in the United States. Currently, the NLI has three core programs of focus: the Leadership Training Program, the Data Fellowship Program, and the Native PowerBase Voter, Data, and Research Program.
Advance Native Political Leadership
Advance Native Political Leadership (Advance) is the first and only national Native-led organization working to build a complete ecosystem approach to power building in Native communities – leadership recruitment and support, civic engagement, data and research, and national coordination. Advance Native Political Leadership holds the following values: pro-choice, pro-Tribal sovereignty, racial justice, gender justice, and dismantling of the systems that continue to oppress marginalized communities.
The Leadership Training Program
The NLI Leadership Training Program is a cohort-based leadership development training that brings together Indigenous leaders from across the country for an immersive week of learning grounded in our shared Indigenous values and culture.
The inaugural class launched in December 2021 and included 14 Indigenous leaders from 12 states and more than 20 tribes. More than 75 percent of the class identified as women and/or Two Spirit, and the participants ranged in age from 22 to 61. Today Advance has nearly 50 alumni who have completed their program.
There were incredible gains in 2022. We still must work to address the vast disparity and unique barriers that exist for Indigenous peoples in U.S. politics. Our partnership also has allowed us to adapt the Advance training curriculum for the unique considerations and practices that exist in Alaska. We are building a future where we see increased Native American representation in elected and appointed offices throughout the country and that begins with the Leadership Training Program.
We are so excited that you are interested in the Native Leadership Institute and would like to take some time to chat with you about your goals and how we might be able to help you achieve them! Thank you for taking this brave step toward running for office. We’re looking forward to getting to know you better and supporting your journey.
